How do you properly insure a teen driver while avoiding unnecessary costs?
Here are ten tips that we recommend when insuring teen drivers:
1. Assign the teen to a car that does not require physical damage coverage (coverage for damage to the vehicle itself).
2. Get a car that can take a scratch or dent and keep going.
3. Enroll in ‘FB Drives Michigan!’ to encourage safe speeds and no texting and driving. You will also receive a sizable discount on your policy.
4. Consider higher deductibles if you can. This will lower your monthly premium.
5. Consider safety features such as airbags and an anti-lock braking system.
6. Consider using Regular Collision instead of Broad Collision.
7. Put a teen driving contract into place to raise the level of accountability.
8. If the teen goes off to college without a vehicle, ask your agent to put the vehicle in “storage.”
9. If your child is in drivers ed, no extra coverage will be needed.
10. Contact your agent to ensure proper PIP (medical) coverage is in place.
